Meet Melissa – REALTOR® in the Comox Valley
Do what you love and love what you do. That’s what Melissa Berrigan believes! Melissa grew up in Vancouver but moved to the picturesque Comox Valley in the fall of 2000. Funny story about moving to the Comox Valley, when she was 16 years old she came to the Valley with her uncle and aunt to help them sail there boat back to Granville Island. Little did she know that one day this would become her home. Now you are probably wondering what brought her back here a second time. It was to be with her now husband of 16 years, who is currently serving the Canadian Armed Forces; and has been for the past 24 years (not all spent in the Valley). Here is where they call home and where they are happy to raise their two boys, Nathan and Jeremy, as well as their two fur babies, Roxy and Ruger a.k.a. in the neighbourhood as the Belgian Malinois.
Melissa joined the world of real estate in 2002 when she worked as an unlicensed assistant for long time REALTORS®, Brent and Donna Cunliffe (now retired). While working and studying “under the best in the industry” she decided she too wanted to be a licenced REALTOR® and work alongside Brent and Donna. She found a passion for helping people through the largest and sometimes most stressful transaction of their lives. In order to achieve becoming a REALTOR® she would work all day immersed in the industry and then go home at night to study. She graduated from the UBC Sauder School of Business in 2004 and has never looked back. In 2015 Melissa was acknowledged for achieving Top Tier status. This status is awarded to those who are in the top 5% in their market.
Giving back is really important to Melissa
Melissa alternates a donation of $500.00 from every completed deal (whether a buyer or seller) to BC SPCA and BC Children’s Hospital. Animals of all kinds have always been very large part of her family. You may find Melissa corralling a lost animal, often times in the middle of the street with treats in hand! BC Children’s hospital is also somewhere she contributes, as her son Jeremy; was born 5 weeks premature. Being slightly over 5lbs at birth, he was in imminent danger of being flown to Children’s Hospital. Thankfully, after some very tense days; Jeremy decided it was time to stop worrying his parents and started to gain weight! He spent the next two weeks at St. Joseph’s Hospital to ensure he was healthy enough to go home. They were lucky, but not everyone is and some children need more care and every little bit helps.
Melissa also chooses to give back to her community through volunteering. She has spent the last nine years volunteering her time in various ways with Comox Valley Minor Hockey, where for the past three years she has sat on the association’s Executive committee, including having served as Vice-President. She has also made significant contributions with Comox Valley Minor Lacrosse and Comox Valley Minor Baseball. If you have a youth sports questions she more than likely has an answer for you.
